START HARP IMMERSION – METRONOME MAGIC

As a musician, whatever your level, the metronome is your best friend. Does this ring true to you or do you just secretly sometimes feel like you would like to chuck it out of a window?! During this IMMERSION we will discuss how you can learn to work well with your metronome using exercise and techniques that will over time help you improve on your flow, agility and speed. Basically I will try to really show you why teachers endlessly go on about how great they are.

We will also work together on Ar Hyd y Nos  (All Through the Night), they will include passages that would benefit from metronome practice so we can look at these using some of the techniques and exercises we work on. We will also look briefly at an extract from the middle movement of the Mozart flute and harp concerto, as this piece really made me embrace my metronome and I would like to to share WHY!

We will also look briefly at an extract from the middle movement of the Mozart flute and harp concerto, as this piece really made me embrace my metronome and I would like to to share WHY!

This START HARP IMMERSION is a little different in format than previous IMMERSIONS as we have an overall focus of working with our metronomes. Please bring your harp and metronome with you to the lessons.

In this short course we work on:

  • A warm updesigned to help us see why we need to work with a metronome.
  • Look at exercisesrelated to the main pieces to focus in on tricky sections (Everyday Exercises), we will focus on how to use the metronome to help us improve.
  • Jump into the techniques you can use to help make working with the metronome easier. I will aim to give you some improvisation ideas at this point in the session at the same time so you can explore your metronome with and without music after the IMMERSION.
  • Learn the tune – Ar Hyd y Nos, by ear or from sheet music, I will aim to teach this so you can practice either skill. We will look at where in the music and how we can use the metronome can help us learn and play the music well.
  • Look at an extension idea for Ar Hyd y Nos which is my own countermelody.
  • Explorea piece of Mozart I feel really made me embrace my metronome, it is an extract from the middle movement of the Mozart flute and harp concerto, if you do not know it then please have a listen before the session if you can! I will share a PDF of a duet version you can keep too!

Online short Course

The course was initially be delivered live on Saturday 9th November 2019 over a 2 hour time slot 3PM-5PM GMT.  Around 48 to 36 hours after the live session, the course will exist as a set of edited videos in ‘Ruzuku’, the online classroom I use for all START HARP courses. The edited videos will include approximately 90 minutes of video training, along with some explanatory text and sheet music downloads for you to print out and keep. You will be able to access for 12 months after signing up for the IMMERSION.

This course is similar to one week of the START HARP 12 week intensive online courses for beginner to intermediate harpists (Level 1, 2 and 3). Full details on www.StartHarp.com.

“Great immersion! As usual, Shelley went above and beyond.” Rebecca Blakeney referring to last IMMERSION (START HARP Level 1, 2 and 3 graduate!)

Following the same ethos and delivery style as the main 3 START HARP 12 week courses, we look at playing from sheet music, improvising and playing by ear all with an underlying focus on a good strong playing technique.

This METRONOME MAGIC course is really aimed at harpists of ANY level wishing to explore working with their metronome. The basic version of Ar Hyd y Nos is aimed to be accessible for beginners but extension ideas will be offered so that anyone can fill out the melody to challenge themselves. As long as you can read treble and bass clef at least a little bit and can play with all four fingers (and turn) you will be ready to take this course. Simplification and extension ideas are offered as we go along so lots to keep everyone busy!

You will have 12 months access to these videos and materials. It is rather like one week of a START HARP 12 week course!

When you sign up you will automatically receive a confirmation on email and then within 48 hours you will be sent a link to the online classroom. If you are signing up before the live session you will receive the meeting link by 1pm GMT on Sunday 9th November 2019. If you do not receive any details when excepted  please check your spam/junk file and if it is not hiding there email me on info@harpwales.com.

Here are some comments from students who have attended previous IMMERSION:

  • Insider info…..don’t miss it but prepare yourself to be bombarded with info in the nicest possible way??
  • Don’t miss it! And don’t be surprised if you feel overwhelmed if you do it live. Shelley basically fits a full week of Start Harp into 2 hours, so it’s a lot to take in live — but then you can go back and work with the videos as you’re already used to doing in Start Harp. Or you can miss the live bit and just do the videos afterward. I did my best learning of Spiralling Shoots after the fact, when my brain was quiet and I could hear myself think and appreciate what I was playing.
  •  I couldn’t join live so learnt it from the recordings, which are great.
  • I was glad to be on the live presentation, although it was early in the morning. However, due to more pressing priorities, I tabled my practice efforts for a future time—hopefully, in September. That is a benefit of the Immersion structure. Sign up for the class and add to your repertoire when you are ready.
  • I also saw it in the replay. It’s great to be able to go over everything slowly…
