START HARP Level 3

START HARP Level 3 is a carefully structured 12-week online harp course designed to follow on from START HARP Level 2. It is also suitable for harpists with a solid foundation who are ready to continue developing their technique, musicianship and confidence.

START HARP Level 3 is designed primarily for harps with a full set of levers and pedal harps. The course is ideal for those playing Celtic lever harps and pedal harps, although many lap harps will also be suitable. If you play a lap harp, please contact Shelley before enrolling with details of your instrument’s octave range so she can advise whether the course materials will be fully accessible.

Throughout the course you’ll continue developing your theory, technique, improvisation, playing by ear and repertoire through a combination of video lessons and written materials. Each week also includes a 20–25 minute play-along practice session, designed to help you make the most of your practice time, even on busy days.

Building on the skills developed in START HARP Levels 1 and 2, Level 3 introduces playing in a wider range of keys (up to three flats and three sharps), while helping you become a more confident and independent musician.

Throughout the course you’ll also explore:

Techniques – Moving On

Including harmonics, different methods of damping, fourth finger slides, thumb slides, mid-piece lever and pedal changes, and trills.

Think Theory

Including reading and writing pedal charts, modulating between pieces, understanding new key signatures, and exploring relative major and minor keys.

‘A Spotlight On’ Lessons

Including effective practice techniques, avoiding aches and pains, extending your repertoire more quickly, preparing to perform, and developing the skills to teach yourself.

To enrol on START HARP Level 3, you should either have completed START HARP Levels 1 and 2 or contact Shelley Fairplay directly to discuss your current level and ensure this is the most appropriate course for you.
