Come and join us this Autumn as Dynamic Harps returns to its original 10 week face to face ensemble classes. We have our 10 week workshop classes, a hybrid rehearsal and recording day in October,  a concert in November and an end of term Christmas celebration!

What is Dynamic Harps?

In 2013, 7 trembling harpists arrived in a small church hall outside Cardiff, unsure what to expect, who they would meet or what they would do. It was the first ever meeting for Dynamic Harps, and yes I was the tutor, one of the 7 tremblers!

The “In person” Dynamic Harps ensemble have performed throughout South Wales, with up to 24 performers in total, we travelled to perform at the Harpes Au Maxes international harp festival in France, Caernarfon International Harp Festival, the Pop and Jazz Wild Strings Harp Festival, National Botanic Garden of Wales and more.  We have guest tutors come in to teach and have learned so much from the likes of Robin Huw Bowen, Meinir Heulyn, Lauren Scott, Deborah Henson-Conant, Ellie Evans and Ben Creighton Griffiths.

When we went online in early 2020 due to COVID-19, we invited harpists across the globe to join us, and what a total joy that turned out to be! At the time of writing there are over 300 harpists enrolled into the ensemble online and a group of these students continue to meet online monthly.

It’s been such an incredible journey,  the power of learning and playing in an ensemble is so strong, we make friends, become better at sight reading, improve our rhythm, our technique, are inspired by others and of course simply enjoy the joy music making together.

All ages and abilities welcome. At this moment in time I am not running a separate children’s ensemble, if there is demand I would be delighted to resume this in Autumn 2022, please email me on info@harpwales.com to express interest and get on to the mailing list.

Come and join us! I promise it will be worth it!

What do you need to join?

You need to already read music a little as we will be working from sheet music. You can be any level as Shelley will write/organise parts to suite your ability. Please rest assured you will be able to play and enjoy the sessions whatever your level.

You will need to have your own harp at home to practice on between sessions and ideally be taking one-to-one lessons in addition to the sessions. Please note Shelley Fairplay is not currently taking on one-to-one students.

10 Week Monday Evening Option + Concert and Bonus Hybrid Recording Workshop

I am delighted that you are interested joining/rejoining the harp ensemble this term. I am really looking forward to getting started and I hope you are too! This term I will be returning to running a 10 week course, the sessions will take place on Monday nights in Radyr. I am excited that we will also be inviting our friends from around the globe to join us once a month for hybrid sessions. This is a trial just for this term, if we enjoy it we can keep it going in 2023, if not we can find a different option!

  • Our 10 workshop sessions start on the 26th September 2022 (with a one week break for half term)
  • We have a hybrid recording session day on the 15th October, where we will welcome additional harpists from around the UK to join us in person as well as our online global harp family. Signing up to the ensemble this term INCLUDES your space for this workshop day as a BONUS with no additional charge. Read more about the day >>HERE<<.
  • We have our end of term concert (daytime) booked in for 27th November 2022 back at the wonderful St Fagan’s Museum where we have played before.
  • We will finish the year with a little Dynamic Harps Christmas celebration at the end of our final session on the 5thDecember 2022.

The cost for attending the 10 week course and concert is £185, with a bonus of a space at the 10th September hybrid workshop and filming day at no additional charge.

10 Week Course Location: The sessions will take place at the Old Church Rooms, Radyr. We have used this space before, it has its own car park and good access for bringing your harp in. The address for the Old Church Rooms is: Park Road, Radyr, CF15 8DF – it is on the same road as the Radyr Primary School and the Library in Radyr. Please be aware that there are other churches in Radyr, if you can’t find us for the first session, please call me on 07960 718663.

Daytime Option: 3 Online Sessions and 2 Face to Face Sessions + Concert and Bonus Hybrid Recording Workshop

I am having to only commit to one face to face Dynamic Harps Session a week this term for a number of reasons, mainly I am still having to tread a very careful line with managing Long Covid, anything is possible but it all comes at a health cost. Secondly the numbers for the daytime group last term were too low to be viable, and I am not able to make the time to promote it well at this time. I will very much keep the idea open for a daytime group and will review this in 2023.

For those of you who were involved in the daytime group, please do not feel disheartened, I would still love to make it possible for you to be part of the group and perform with us on the 27th November 2022, here is how it is possible:

  1. Come along to the daytime workshop on the 15th October 2022 (Read more about the day >>HERE<<)
  2. Please attend or watch the replay of the other autumn term Hybrid sessions online
  3. I will hold two Tuesday daytime sessions (10am-12 noon) on the 15th and 22nd November 2022 to pull everything together ahead of the concert. You will need to attend both of these face to face sessions if you would like to perform in the concert on the 27th November 2022.

The cost for attending the group in this way will be £65 for the Autumn Term 2022. I will only be able to run this session if we have enough harpists sign up due to the venue hire costs.

Daytime Option Location: These will take place in the beautiful Drawing Room at Insole Court, Llandaff, Cardiff. There are details on how to find Insole Court here: https://insolecourt.org/visit/getting-here. If you cannot find us on the day, please call me on 07960 718663.

Anyone enrolling on the 10 week course is welcome to attend the two daytime Tuesday sessions at no extra charge, these will be optional for you of course, just a little bonus to your practice before the concert if you happen to be free.

Please be aware that each term you are expected to commit to the compulsory concert and to attend a minimum 8 of 10 sessions, this is so we can learn our parts, learn to perform within the ensemble and then be there on the concert day to play our parts so that the balance within the pieces works well.  Life can very easily creep up on us with unexpected happenings,

I totally understand last minute changes, but if you already know you are unable to attend at least 8 rehearsals and/or the concerts this term please let me know as you may need to have a break and re-join us next term. We have to think of the whole group and all the hard work everyone puts in, to make sure we respect one another and our wonderful music making.

Times: Dynamic Harps on Monday evenings will run from 6.45pm – 8.45pm. Please arrive to set up and tune by 6.30pm and be ready to play from 6.45pm. If you are not tuned and ready by 6.45pm please can your set up outside the room and join us once you are ready to make sure we can all get the most from our sessions. The two daytime slots on Tuesday will run 10am-12 noon.

What to bring: Harp, music Stand, harp stool (or there are normal chairs to use at venue), tuning equipment, spare strings if you have them, ensemble music file (which you will be given at the first session), pencil, rubber. Please where possible clearly mark your equipment with your name.

What next?

From now on, all payments will be taken online, please visit this page to pay for the 10 sessions or the daytime option to secure your place. I am limiting numbers due to space. I would also love an enrolment form filled in for the first official session of term, I can collect them when we meet and will have spare copies with me for you to fill in if you are not able to print one out in advance.

The fee for the 10 week course of Dynamic Harps is £185 for the term, for the daytime option the fee is £65. Please select the 10-week or Daytime option when making payment.

COVID-19 Precautions and Guidelines: We will follow guidance from the Welsh Government at all times. Masks and pre-session testing will not be required during the 10 week workshops this term. If this makes attending prohibitive for anyone wishing to join please email me on info@harpwales.com so I can do my very best to accommodate your needs.
