Course begins 3rd June 2024

FREE ‘Technique Booster Course’ (usually £75) for all early bird sign ups by the 14th February.

This 6 week class aims to help students to prepare and study a piece, ready to perform to the group by the end of the course.

You can be at any level to take this class and will be invited to choose your own piece (although Shelley will provide a number of pieces in the class for to you work on if you prefer).

The emphasis will be on many of the ideas that weave through all the Fairplay Harp School courses. Initially we will work on discovering overview of the music (such as genre, pattern spotting, form/shape of the piece) preparation of the score (e.g. adding fingering, levers/pedals, any other markings to helps us), we will then discuss practice methods, pinch points and create exercises from the music and work on our pieces, checking in with the group and workshopping each week using tried and tested ideas to help us progress. Yes, of course the metronome will be used!

This course can be accessed whatever your level. It also follows on well from the Flourishing Harpist 12 week class as it will enable a focus space to put into action many of the ideas studied during the course. if you have any concerns or questions please email Shelley on info@harpwales.com

What will we work on?

  • Overview of your chosen music
  • Preparation of score
  • Pinch point exercises specific to chosen piece
  • Using a practice diary
  • Mindset (including acceptance)
  • Metronome use
  • Sharing challenges to the group
  • Written tasks
  • Playing tasks
  • Working on the groove of your piece (I believe this works with any genre!)
  • Finding escape and rescue points
  • Accountability
  • Motivational goal of end of class performance in the safe space of the group

“This was my first time taking Prepare Study Preform so all the concepts Shelley presented here were a new way to look at how to take a new piece from the first look at it to performance in specified time frame, 6 weeks for this course.  I have had exposure in her Start Harp 1,2,3 in using everyday exercises taken from the piece to help learn tricky parts.  In PSP we found parts to use as warm ups, exercises and if needed down to very small Micro-practice loops to help learn the piece.  This approach can be used for any piece simple to complex that is within the level and techniqual ability you have and end up with a piece you can preform for others.  Due to all the ways you look at your piece you really know it, even memorizing all or parts of it without even trying. During it all you have a group of classmates who are supportive of you and you find you are not along in the difficulties in learning a piece of music. This is a wonderful course of all Harpiest in gaining a tool box of skill to use in getting music ready to preform.  I will take this couse again.  Thanks to Shelley and my Classmates for all the support and skill this class has given me.”
Janet, Autumn Class 2022

“This is a great 6 week course.  Shelley is an expert guide through the painful and rewarding process of unpacking (prepare), reassembling (study), and exhibiting (perform) a piece of music to flourish at YOUR level.  It’s a great feeling to achieve competence and confidence in playing your own choice of music – and then adding it to your gig bag.  Highly recommended for harpists at all stages of learning.  I’ll be doing it all again in 2023!”
Sue, Autumn Class 2022

“A great course with so much to use in future, again and again! Working on an individual piece, and aiming for completion, in small steps, has been something l’ll incorporate for everything I am working on. For performance pieces, make your goal something achievable and enjoy what you are doing. The feedback from others has been fantastic for developing ideas and building confidence.”
Annie, Autumn Class 2022

“Prepare, Study, Perform is one of Shelley’s best. If you have a piece of music you really want to play beautifully, this is the one. With Shelley at your side and your fellow students rooting for you the possibilities are endless. As long as you are prepared to put the work in, there are no limits to what you can achieve. This is the finishing piece of the jigsaw which, together with the vast repository of foundation materials at your disposal , completes the formidable toolkit for the budding harpist. You chose your piece, it doesn’t have to be complicated, in fact simplicity is an asset. You commit to it and during the six weeks of the course you get to know it inside out, upside down, every which way. You may even find that by the end of the process you have accidentally learnt to play it off by heart without the music! Then in the final week you play your piece to the class and listen to everybody else’s. What joy! ”
Rosie, Autumn Class 2022

“This is my first time round for me. It was jam packed, and very sympathetic to our status as new performers. Shelley shows she understands the struggle to get it right, and ready to perform. I did this mostly from replays due to time difference. Very handy when we are in different time zones. Thank you zoom. Yes I would do it again that way, but it’s good to access the chat times to review and ask questions. But also to find encouragement in the common experience. Others are finding the same obstacles. It makes a huge difference when we name them and share them.
I can’t thank the rest of the class enough in their support, and encouragement. So nice to have people who can always find something nice to say. Thank you, Thank you. It really does mean a lot. And it says a lot about our leadership, setting the tone for our classes. Thanks Shelley.”
Deirdre, Autumn Class 2022

“This is one of the most valuable courses I have taken.  Learning a process for how to approach a new piece and really doing it step-by-step helped so much and made my practice time most efficient and successful.  Spending time in the music, marking it up, listening to recordings all before playing were invaluable pieces of the process that I know I would have done quickly and ineffectively prior to this course.  Even though I now know the process and can put it to use on my own, I would take this course again to work through the process with the feedback and support of the other participants—this was also an important part of the course.”
Kimberly, Spring Class 2022
“Prepare, Study, Perform took me on an incredible 6 week journey. Even though I was only able to attend a few live sesssions, I still able to reap the benefits.  This is one of my favourite courses of Shelley’s. I committed to a piece that I could thrive at my level. Each week offered incredible insight into moving my piece forward. It is designed for us to have confidence to perform for our peers whether live or video. Embracing imperection takes a lot of pressure off. I felt I was at home with all my friends. The group is incedibly supportive. Shelley did an outstanding job with the design of this course. She is a stellar teacher and mentor. We all admire and adore her! I will definitely sign up again when this course is offered.”
Elizabeth, Autumn Class 2022

“Shelley, as usual, went to extraordinary lengths to make sure we knew what was expected at each stage of choosing and developing a piece for performance.  It was more challenging and in-depth than I was expecting, but until you go through all the aspects of playing for others, it is surprising what might trip you up and the preparation is key.  Shelley, with her clarity of focus, reached out to each one of us and brought out our potential in ways that were both effective and insightful, and it was fun.  It’s a course of great value!”
Mike, Spring Class 2022
